Backfile & Indexes

Broadside Magazine was founded in 1962 by Agnes “Sis” Cunningham and her husband, Gordon Friesen, as a small mimeographed publication. By the end of the seventies it had virtually ceased publication. In 1982 it was revived by Norman Ross, a publisher and songwriter, and Jeff Ritter, a musician and folklorist.  Sis & Gordon published Nos. 1-145. Norman & Jeff then published 146-180, after which Sis & Gordon published 6 more issues, and then quit. All issues from # 1-186 are now available free on this site. None of the first 145 issues had names or themes, but many of those in the 146-180 group did. In many of the early issues the pages were not numbered–or some were and some weren’t! There are several indexes to Nos. 1-145 that were created in the 1980s and there are two indexes to 146-186 that were created especially for this website. Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to combine them.
Sis Cunningham was a songwriter and a member of the Almanac Singers (with Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Millard Lampell, Bess Lomax Hawes and others). Jeff Ritter is a member of the Beagle Brothers. Norman Ross plays guitar with his grandson, Asher Ross Grossman, and sings off key.
